A penny for the guy...

Guy Fawkes Day,

also called Bonfire Night, British observance, celebrated on November 5, commemorating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

The Gunpowder Plot conspirators, led by Robert Catesby, were zealous Roman Catholics enraged at King James I for refusing to grant greater religious tolerance to Catholics. They planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament (Palace of Westminster) during the state opening of Parliament, intending to kill the king and members of Parliament in order to clear the way to reestablishing Catholic rule in England. The plan failed when the conspirators were betrayed. One of them, Guy Fawkes, was taken into custody the evening before the attack, in the cellar where the explosives to be used were stashed. The other conspirators were all either killed resisting capture or—like Fawkes—tried, convicted, and executed.
In the aftermath, Parliament declared November 5 a national day of thanksgiving, and the first celebration of it took place in 1606.

Today Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom, and in a number of countries that were formerly part of the British Empire, with parades, fireworks, bonfires, and food. Straw effigies of Fawkes are tossed on the bonfire, as are—in more recent years in some places—those of contemporary political figures. Traditionally, children carried these effigies, called “Guys,” through the streets in the days leading up to Guy Fawkes Day and asked passersby for “a penny for the guy,” often reciting rhymes associated with the occasion, the best known of which dates from the 18th
century:

Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder treason and plot
We see no reason
Why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot….

Fireworks, a major component of most Guy Fawkes Day celebrations, represent the explosives that were never used by the plotters. Guards perform an annual search of the Parliament building to check for potential arsonists, although it is more
ceremonial than serious. Lewes, in southeastern England, is the site of a celebration of Guy Fawkes Day that has a distinctly local flavour, involving six bonfire societies whose memberships are grounded in family history stretching back for generations.

According to Wikipedia :

Fawkes is sometimes referred to, jokingly, as "the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions".

Ring-ding, ring-ding... tis the season.

Below is an email from a fellow Harley Owners Group Chapter member.

It's true we (bikers) do a lot of charity events and it's true that a lot of the population think we're just "bikers", "ruffians" etc.

This truly warms my heart.

I went to Michael's today to get some flowers to do some last minute crafts. You know the people who stand outside the stores and hold the bells and gather donations for the Salvation Army, well there was this sweet little old lady out there. She looked so cold. I walked passed her when I went in and she smiled at me and I saw that she noticed my jacket, yes I was wearing my Harley gear. When I came out from shopping I walked over to her and told her that they needed to give them credit card machines, I didn't carry cash and I was really sorry because I felt horrible walking into the store buying myself things and not giving any money to help benefit her cause. She looked at me and smiled, she grabbed my hand gently and said, "Oh my dear dear child, don't you think twice about that, I read in the newspaper about all that you guys do for the children and charities in the area. You all do your part all year round. God Bless your Chapter and may God be with you all always."

So if you can pass this on and let others know that in the middle of Spotsy on a rainy and nasty day, a little old lady took the time to make sure to acknowledge...........RICHMOND ROCKS!!!

M.

Richmond does, indeed, Rock!!!

my wish list...

My mother keeps saying, "I haven't gotten a list from you yet"
Which means, 'If you want a christmas gift... you'd best better tell me what you want'
Yeah, she really talks that way.

Okay, Mom... here's ONE of my wish lists:

My Amazon.com Wish List

I really like the proliferation of "Wishlist" features on websites.  If for no other reason than they remind me of stuff I'd like to buy when I have the bucks.
I just placed two new items on the Amazon wish list, the Nosferatu (The Ultimate Two-Disc DVD Edition)  and Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition).

Turkey Day...

Thanksgiving was great, thanks! It was kinda nice wakin' up in the same place I was having my Thanksgiving dinner... no traveling! And I made the green bean casserole! Our family's Thanksgiving meal is pretty typical. Well, I guess I'm saying the "typical", "conventional" T-day meal includes: turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, pumpkin pie... etcetera etcetera...

Here's a question for the masses!

Is there a dish that is a part of your family's traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas meal that's ... let's say... unconventional? Hmmmm? Let's hear it!

Aside from turkey day, what have I been doing?? Not much, that's for sure.

The local "Ladies of Harley" (as well as a few of the fellas) have been volunteering their time at the local Harley-Davidson store providing free gift wrapping. I've been helping out, wrapping, hanging out with friends, etc. We started on "Black Friday" and will continue on the weekends until Christmas.

happy birthday to me... happy birthday to me...

I'm so sorry I've been out of touch. It's like I've been holding my breath for a month and I'm still not breathing yet... maybe soon. Still don't have the separation papers yet. Appraisal on the house was done yesterday. I'm pretty sure that's all we were waiting for and my attorney should be able to complete everything.
I still don't have internet access at "home" yet. Actually, I just dropped my pc off at the computer place... video issues. I've been logging on at work, at Fwed's, at W's... anyplace I can get my hands on a computer. At the moment, I'm writing this from Circuit City on one of their wireless laptops... I gotta get me one of these. Especially considering how much time I spend at Starbucks, Panera, public libraries, etc... If I did that, I wouldn't have to sign up for that EXPENSIVE satellite hookup out in Outer Bum Fuck Egypt! I'd just spend all my time in hot spots.
Anyway...
I DO feel I'm coming out of the fog and I plan to be here more often now.
T, "Hands", "The Chef" and W are heading to Key West in the next couple of days... WITHOUT ME! I can't believe I'm not going this year, but I'm house/dog sitting for W and "The Chef" so that will be nice... hmmmm hot tub, sauna, and internet access for 10 days. WooHoo! And solitude! Unless I can convince someone to visit... hehe. hmmm wonder who??
Oh, by the way... I'm sorry I had to put the text thingy on the comments, but the spam posts were driving me nuts. I hope this doesn't annoy any of you and I certainly hope you will still leave me comments!
Thanks for hanging around guys! I love you!
Now I think I'll go spend some $$ on myself... happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me...
did I mention it's my BIRTHDAY?!

Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Don't hate me 'cause I'm goin' on vacation!!

Well, a long weekend anyway... and Yes, In Myrtle Beach South Carolina!

I'm looking forward to it... but I'd had such plans. Well, suffice it to say MY PLANS TURNED TO SHIT! Sorry... but I was disappointed. you know, just a call from you would make me feel so much better... but you won't, will you?
NONE THE LESS, I'm headed to Myrtle Beach with my Goil Friends and I can't wait. So much so that I can't seem to go to sleep.

If I find an internet connection (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg) I'll stop by and drop you guys a line. Otherwise, I'll tell you all about it when I get back. TTFN...

do you still love me? L.Y.
